Your Family Photography Questions, Answered.

Top 5 Questions Moms Ask Before Booking a Family Photography Session

As a mom, youโ€™re always juggling a million thingsโ€”keeping track of everyoneโ€™s schedules, making sure the house is in order, and still finding time to create lasting memories with your family. If youโ€™ve been considering a family photography session but feel overwhelmed with questions, youโ€™re not alone! As a Jacksonville family photographer, I get asked so many questions about family photography. Iโ€™ve put together the five most common questions moms like you ask to make the process as seamless as possible.

1. What should we wear for our family photos?

This is hands-down the most frequent question I get, and for good reasonโ€”coordinating outfits for the whole family can feel daunting. My advice? Start with a color palette of 2-3 complementary tones. Neutral colors with soft accents (like blush, sage, or navy) photograph beautifully. Avoid loud patterns or logos that can distract from your familyโ€™s connection.

And rememberโ€”comfort is key! If your kids arenโ€™t comfortable, it will show in the photos. I always provide a wardrobe guide and offer free personalized styling based on your familyโ€™s style and the season of your session.

2. What if my kids donโ€™t cooperate during the session?

Every mom worries about this, but let me reassure youโ€”itโ€™s completely normal! As a Jacksonville photographer who specializes in working with families, Iโ€™ve seen it all.

My approach is to make the session fun and relaxed. Iโ€™ll use games, prompts, and natural interaction to capture genuine smiles and connections. Sometimes the candid moments of kids just being themselves are the ones parents treasure most. It may seen counterintuitive at first, but I actually ask my parents not to reprimand or scold their children during their photo session! Think of it as a little, mini โ€œYes Dayโ€, where the kids are in charge! Weโ€™ll follow their lead if needed and I promise you we will create beautiful photographs at the same time.

3. When is the best time of year to schedule our session?

This depends on your goals. If you want your photos done in time for holiday cards and gifts, aim for October or early November. Spring sessions are perfect for soft blooms and fresh greenery, while early summer is great for gorgeous beach sessions.

All outdoor sessions take place during the โ€œgolden hourโ€โ€”the hour before sunset or after sunrise. The soft, flattering light is worth the slightly adjusted bedtime. Iโ€™m happy to offer more tips about adjusting your childโ€™s nap or bedtime based on the time of your session and your childโ€™s age.

I recommend booking a few months in advance to ensure your preferred date, especially during the busy holiday season.

4. How do we prepare for the session?

Preparation is key to a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are my top tips:

  • Plan outfits early to avoid last-minute stress. Send me photos or have me do the styling for you for even more help.

  • Pack non-messy snacks and water for little ones (and maybe a treat for you!).

  • Talk to your kids ahead of time about the session in a fun way so they know what to expect.

  • Relax and trust the process. The more comfortable and natural you are, the better the photos will turn out.

Iโ€™ll send a detailed prep guide after booking, so youโ€™ll know exactly what to expect and how to get ready.

5. What happens after the session?

After our session, Iโ€™ll carefully edit the best images to ensure every detail is perfect while keeping them natural and timeless. Within two weeks, youโ€™ll receive a private online gallery to view and download your photographs.

From there, youโ€™ll have options to order prints, albums, or wall art to display in your home. I love helping families create heirloom-quality keepsakes that will be cherished for generations.

I hope these answers help ease some of your worries and get you excited about capturing beautiful memories with your family. I have been a family photographer for over ten years, any more questions you have I guarantee I can answer them!
