If your blog post's featured images are fairly low resolution, you may want to delete the top image canvas. Your blog will still look gorgeous, but the top banner section looks best when you upload an image that's 2500px on the long side. You can also use our fave TinyJpeg to make them small so your blog posts still load quickly!

Why I Don’t Use Props for Newborn Sessions

February 6, 2023

Jacksonville Newborn Photographer

As a Jacksonville newborn photographer, one of the top questions I get asked is whether or not I use props during newborn photography sessions. My answer is always a emphatic “No” – let me tell you why.

First off let me clarify that there is no “right” or “wrong” photography style. Whether a photographer chooses to use props or not is completely their call and depends on their style. Much like everything in life, make sure you choose a Jacksonville newborn photographer that fits the style that you like the most.

The style of newborn photography that I offer is called “lifestyle newborn photography”. What that means is that I photograph my clients in a way that portrays them living their lives. Yes, I will pose them certain ways and give them instructions during their session. However I also try and capture candid moments such as feeding baby, playing with siblings while baby eats, etc. This style of newborn photography creates an intimate setting that includes all members of the family. The reason I love this style of photography is because it truly brings you back to that time in your life. You have documentation of your house, your kids, your family.

Because of the genre of photography that I offer my newborn clients, there is no need for props. However, I do encourage my clients to set aside any special swaddles, blankets, or momentos that they might want to include in their session. I have had people use baby blankets passed down for generations, heirloom rattles and other special items during their newborn photography session. I also have some clients that don’t have anything sentimental that they want to include, and that is fine too.

And as always – I have to include a disclaimer: If there is a certain item that you want to include in your newborn photography session I will try my hardest to include it. But as we all know, babies are unpredictable and they will guide our session flow. I try my best, but nothing is guaranteed.

If you are looking to book a Jacksonville newborn photographer and lifestyle newborn photography is your jam, I would love to work with you! You can view my portfolio HERE, get more information about newborn sessions HERE, and if you are ready to book please get in touch.
