The Ultimate Jacksonville Family Photography Guide
Everything You Need to Know to Plan a Beautiful,
Stress-Free Family Photo Session
Hey there, I’m Tracy — your Jacksonville family photographer and your unofficial chaos coordinator.
I specialize in beautiful, joy-filled photo sessions for families who love deeply, laugh loudly, and maybe show up to picture day with snack crumbs on their shirts (no judgment, I promise).
If the idea of wrangling everyone for a photo feels a little overwhelming—I totally get it. I’m a mom too, and I know that getting in front of the camera can feel like a lot. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be. This guide is your go-to resource for making the whole experience feel relaxed, meaningful, and dare I say… actually fun?
Whether this is your first time or your fifth, I’ve got your back. From what to wear to how to keep the kids smiling, we’ll walk through it all together—so you end up with images you adore and memories that last way longer than the snack bribes it took to get them.
Let’s Break it Down
When to Book Your Jacksonville Family Photographer
The best time to reach out and book your session? As soon as you think, “We really need new family photos.” Ideally, that’s 2–3 months in advance, especially during the busy fall and holiday seasons when weekend spots book quickly. Planning ahead ensures you get your preferred date and plenty of time to coordinate outfits, plan location details, and build excitement instead of stress.
I take on a limited number of sessions each month to give every client a fully personalized experience. You’re not just another appointment on my calendar, you’re a family whose story matters. So, the earlier you book, the more flexibility we have to tailor your session to your family's unique needs, rhythms, and personalities.
Tip:
Fall and spring are the most popular seasons thanks to NE Florida’s weather (you know: hot, hotter, hottest and fall). Weekend dates in October, November, March and April are in the most demand and book out the fastest. Looking to schedule a last minute session? A week day evening may give you a better chance of booking with the photographer that you want.
If you’re booking an extended family session around the winter or summer holidays, try to schedule at least 2-3 months in advance. This way, everyone has enough time to coordinate travel schedules, plan outfits across all family groups, and to make sure everyone in the family has a chance to prepare.
Outdoor sessions typically take place 1 hour before sunset. It’s important to keep this in mind if you have a child that has a strict bedtime and isn’t flexible (it’s me, I used to have that kid!). If that’s you, you may want to book your session for late fall when the sunset is earlier in the evening. However, I find that most children are able to stay up a little later if needed for a late summer sunset.

What to Expect During Your Family Photography Session at the Beach
Beach family photography sessions are the best. But, with the beach comes a few more variables than your traditional park location for family pictures. Sand, wind, water - oh my! Here are my favorite tips for beach family photography sessions.

Step by Step Process of Your Family Photography Session
Over the past twelve years I have changed and tweaked and modified the client experience. I have come up with a tried and true process that is easy and fun for families, and results in beautiful images and a wonderful experience for everyone. Let’s walk through a typical family photo session from booking to gallery delivery.
The Best Jacksonville Locations for Family Photography
Choosing the right location sets the tone for your entire session. Are you a barefoot-on-the-beach kind of family? Do your kids light up in wide open nature spaces? Or maybe you prefer a more classic, clean studio look. Here are my top three recommendations:
North Beach at Guana Preserve
This spot is a coastal gem—quiet, scenic, and full of natural beauty. The beautiful sand dunes that line the shore make a gorgeous background for photographs, and there is a nice, wide beach area. The beach here is less crowded than others in Jacksonville, which means fewer distractions and a more peaceful experience. Think golden light reflecting off the waves, sandy toes, and authentic joy. This location can only be booked for sunset sessions.
Why it's great:
Stunning golden light at sunset, with beautiful grassy dunes
Less busy than the bigger, more well known beach access points
No city noise or buildings, just sand dunes and rolling waves
Pro tip: Dress in light, monochromatic neutral tones for an elevated beach look. Pastels can bring softness to the sand and sunset skies. And bolder colors can add a pop of contrast to the beach scene.
Fun tip: Want to make a night of it after your session and take the family out afterwards to celebrate? Valley Smoke is one of my favorite Ponte Vedra restaurants that’s close to this location. Interested in just getting a quick treat? Try Flo’s for the yummiest ice cream this side of the ICW.
Alpine Groves Park
Located along the river in St. Johns County, Alpine Groves Park offers tall lives oak trees, dreamy Spanish moss, wide-open grass, and a rustic dock overlooking the river. It’s perfect if you want that charming, Southern feel to your family photographs. Bonus - this location can be booked for sunrise or sunset, depending on your family’s schedule.
Why it's great:
Lots of variety in one spot: trees, large grassy area, and water views
Ideal for families who don’t want photos on the beach
This park the best combination of manicured space without being too stuffy
Easy parking and restrooms (parents, rejoice!)
Pro tip: If you want to utilize the pier for photographs on the water, then your session should be schedule just after sunrise to get pretty, pastel tones over the river.
Fun tip: Looking to celebrate a job well done and fill everyone’s tummy’s after your session? Bella Vista is one of my family’s favorite restaurants and it’s right up the road from Alpine Groves Park. Looking for something a little more casual? The locally famous V Pizza has an outpost nearby in Mandarin.
Natural Light Studio Sessions
Studio sessions are perfect for those hot (or rainy) summer days, when you need a session during the mid-day hours, or when you want a crisp, minimalist aesthetic. Studio space offers an easy, controlled environment with beautiful soft light and white walls. This is a great choice for families with anyone who prefers air-conditioning and fewer variables. Studio sessions can be booked throughout the day, and can be a great option for families that have strict nap and bedtime schedules.
Why it's great:
Weather-proof and kid-friendly
Clean, modern background that keeps the focus on you
Option to include simple props, rugs, or personal touches
Pro tip: Consider bringing a second outfit for variety. This space works beautifully for cozy, intimate portraits.
Fun tip: Want to reward the kids (and yourself) with the most insane milkshakes you’ve ever seen? It’s a quick ride to The Yard Milkshake Bar from the studio.
Bonus Location - Fort Clinch
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, Fort Clinch is 100% worth it. Located in charming Fernandina Beach, this location gives you the best of both worlds—towering live oak trees with Spanish moss and a scenic beach just a short walk away. The road leading into the fort might be my absolute favorite ever. It’s what my kids used to call a “tree tunnel” when they were little. If you want to maximize the variety of your photographs, this place is the best.
Why it's great:
Beautiful variety in one session: historic fort, mossy trees, and beach access
A peaceful, unique backdrop that feels like an adventure
Great for families who want something a little extra special and don’t mind a mini road trip
Pro tip: Due to the towering, moss covered trees, these sessions should be scheduled 1.5 hours before sunset. Make sure to bring a pair of flats for the walk between the two locations.
Fun tip: Fernandina Beach is an absolutely charming town and a perfect place to grab a bite to eat or sweet treat afterwards as a reward. And I’m convinced there’s nothing sweeter than strolling their adorable shop lined streets at dusk, with an ice cream in hand, and your family by your side.
Don’t see what you’re looking for? Don’t worry! There are literally dozens of amazing locations for your photography session. Together we will decide which one is perfect for your family.
What to Wear for Jacksonville Family Photos
Wardrobe stress? Not here. Styling is part of the experience when you book with me. I offer everything from light guidance with color palettes to complete, shoppable style boards built around your family’s vibe, season, and location. I know that figuring out your family’s outfits for your session is one of the top stressors for moms. And I totally get it! I’ve compiled all of the best tips and information for what to wear and how to style your family here, so that it’s in one easy place.
My Styling Approach
START WITH MOM: If you feel great, it sets the tone. Choose something that fits well, moves nicely, and feels like you. Mama - you deserve to feel like the star of the show. You do SO MUCH for your family. Don’t leave yourself until last.
BUT: If you have a family member that is particularly picky about what they wear, you may have to start with them first. When my daughter was a toddler she was extremely picky about the types of fabric that she wore. For a couple years I started with her outfit first, then built around her. Once she outgrew that phase and was more flexible, I went back to building around my outfit first.
BUILD FROM THERE: Coordinate, don’t match. The goal is to have your families coordinate nicely, not match exactly. As a general rule I suggest picking 2-3 neutrals and 2-3 colors with soft contrast depending on how big your family is. Neutrals include black, grey, navy, denim, white/cream and khaki/tan.
FABRIC AND TEXTURE: Utilizing different fabrics and textures can create visual interest in your photos. Satin, chunky knits, crisp cotton, ribbed knits and fine gauge sweaters can add more depth than if everyone was wearing the same, plain fabric.
PRINTS: I love adding 1-2 prints per family to bring in more colors and some visual interest to their outfits. However, not all patterns are created the same. Try to stick to one small print and one medium/large size print, and be thoughtful about the person wearing the prints.
SHOES AND ACCESSORIES: Shoes and accessories are a great way to make your outfits pop and add some fun details. Whenever possible try to avoid wearing sports sneakers as some photos will be full length. Fun jewelry, hats and vests can add some whimsy to your photos and can be easily removed and added for variety. If you have your photo session at the beach, leave your shoes at home! It’s way more fun and comfortable to be barefoot on the beach.
THINK TIMELESS: Avoid logos, neon, or trendy prints that may date your images in a year.
Suggestions for Each Family Member
Mom: Midi or maxi dresses in neutral tones, simple jewelry, and soft hair/makeup photograph beautifully.
Dad: Fitted chinos, jeans or shorts, rolled sleeves, henley shirts or casual button-downs in earth tones.
Kids: Comfort is key. Choose clothes they won’t tug at or want to take off. Twirly dresses are great for girls if they are into that style. Comfortable fabrics can make all the difference between a happy kid and a fussy kid.
Babies: Rompers are hands down my favorite item for babies, especially if they are not yet walking. Dresses are sweet for baby girls, as long as they don’t overpower the baby (less frills and fabric the better). And a sweet little shirt and shorts is adorable for baby boys. Barefoot is always the cutest as long as the weather allows for it.
Additional Tips
My favorite examples of neutral colors are cream, gray, taupe, and tan. I don't recommend bright white (it tends to photograph blue) or lots of black.
Try to stay away from really bright red and pinks, as they can blow out in camera (yes, even my fancy professional camera!)
Remember to keep your location in mind when choosing colors. For example, if the location will have a lot of green, then try not to wear much green because you will blend right in.
If you will be hanging your photos in your home, make sure you choose colors that will look good in your space and not clash with your decor.

Not into shopping? I’ll do it for you. I can source outfits for the entire family and send a style board with clickable links. Easy, no stress, and beautifully coordinated.

After the Session: Turning photographs into Art and protecting your photographs
Arguably, THE most important part of your photography session happens AFTER your session. What are you going to do with your photographs? Are you going to let them collect digital dust? Or are you going to put them to use, and create family heirlooms that will last generations? What is the best way to back-up your digital images and how do you keep them safe over the years to make sure they don’t get deleted or disappear into the ether?
Here are a couple of my favorite ways to print your photographs and make them a tangible part of your family story. And even more important - how to preserve and protect your photographs for years to come.
Framed Prints
Whether you are looking for one, big statement frame or a big gallery wall (or anything in between), framing your photographs to display around your home is such a beautiful way to enjoy your photographs and honor your family.
I offer a collection of beautifully curated selection of frames, fit for any style of decor. Each photograph is custom made and are delivered ready to hang and designed to last. We’ll choose sizes and layouts that complement your home and reflect your personal style.
Whether you want a gallery wall, a single statement piece, or even framed gifts for grandparents — I help with it all.
Photo Albums
There’s nothing like holding your family’s story in your hands. A photo album stands the test of time and is sure to be enjoyed by generations. How many of you grew up looking through your parents or grandparents photo albums? Small photos stuck to a page with photo corners or a static plastic sheet? The nostalgia and feeling of belonging to a bigger family unit is overwhelming every time you flip the pages of a family photo album. Whether you choose a lightweight, consumer grade option or a beautiful, custom made heirloom album, the result is still the same. A tangible book that documents your family’s history.
The albums that I offer my clients are handcrafted with thick pages, lay-flat designs, and premium cover options. I design each album myself to reflect the flow and beauty of your session. But even if you don’t purchase an album from me, it is SO important to design and print one yourself.

Extended Family Sessions: photographing Generations
There’s something truly special about gathering all your favorite people in one place—especially when it’s rare. Whether it’s a holiday celebration, a milestone birthday, or the one week a year everyone’s finally in town, extended family sessions are a meaningful way to document the bonds across generations.
These sessions often include grandparents, adult siblings, cousins, and multiple nuclear families. And while it might sound a little chaotic (and let’s be honest, it can be), the outcome is always worth it: genuine, connection-filled portraits that become family treasures for years to come.
What to Expect
We’ll start with the big group portrait—the full family all together in one joyful, imperfect, beautiful frame. From there, I’ll photograph each smaller family unit individually, then move into combinations like grandkids with grandparents, siblings together, or the original family (just the adult siblings or just the grandparents with their kids). While these sessions tend to be a little more posed and traditional in nature, I’ll also capture candid in-between moments—those quick hugs, inside jokes, or tiny hands grabbing grandma’s fingers. These are often the most meaningful frames of all.
You don’t need to worry about directing people or making a shot list—I’ve got it handled. My goal is to make it feel as easy and enjoyable as possible, even with a big group. I’ll guide everyone into position, keep the pace moving, and help even the most photo-shy family members feel comfortable.
Tips for a Smooth Extended Family Session
1. Coordinate Wardrobe, Don’t Match
Just like regular family photography sessions, the goal here is to coordinate instead of match exactly. Choose a shared color palette that fits the location (with large families you can do as many as 3 colors and 3 neutrals), and let each smaller family choose outfits that complement one another. Neutrals, earth tones, or soft blues and greens always work well and look cohesive without feeling overly styled. And don’t forget to add texture where you can. Fine knits, linen, cotton and denims all provide texture without overheating during the summer months.
2. Keep the Vibe Low-Stress
Bring water, non-messy snacks (if your session takes place during dinner time), and even a blanket or activity to keep little ones happy while they wait. If you have a family member that likes to play cruise director, don’t worry I will handle them. There is sure to be a little chaos at your session and that’s ok. The more relaxed everyone feels, the more natural the photos will be.
3. Choose a Location That Offers Variety
With larger groups, it helps to have space to spread out and move around. The beach is great for this, as we have plenty of room to roam. My favorite beach location offers beautiful sand dunes and views with the water. If your group includes elderly family members, we’ll also keep mobility in mind when choosing a location.
4. Let Me Take the Lead
I’ll guide the flow of the session so you don’t have to stress about who goes where or what comes next. I’ll make sure we get all the important groupings, but I’ll also stay flexible to follow the energy and dynamic of your family.
These sessions might feel a bit like organized chaos in the moment, but they always result in magic. When you look back on the images—the cousins giggling, the three generations lined up together, the quiet smiles between parents and grown children—you’ll be so glad you documented this time.
Whether this is a once-in-a-decade gathering or a new tradition, extended family sessions are a priceless gift to everyone involved.
Family Photography Session While You’re on Vacation in Jacksonville
If your family is planning a vacation to Jacksonville, St. Augustine, or Ponte Vedra, it’s the perfect time to schedule a professional photo session. Not only are you already in relaxation mode (which means way less stress), but you’re also surrounded by some of the most scenic backdrops Florida has to offer.
Whether you’re staying oceanfront or exploring our charming downtowns, booking a Jacksonville family photographer while on vacation gives you a unique opportunity to preserve the joy, connection, and togetherness that vacations are all about.
Why Book a Family Photographer While on Vacation?
Let’s be real—getting everyone together for photos at home can feel impossible. Between school, sports and work schedules it can be really hard to find time for annual family photos. But while you’re on vacation? You’re already making time for each other. The vibe is lighter. The kids are more relaxed. And you finally have the chance to just be with your people. That’s the kind of energy you want to remember.
Plus, having photos taken in a new (and beautiful) location makes them feel extra special. Jacksonville’s coastal beauty, parks, and stunning beaches make the perfect backdrop for timeless, effortless portraits.
Incorporating A Photo Session Into Your Family Getaway
Most families find that mid-week is the sweet spot for a photo session. You’re unpacked, everyone’s in the vacation groove, and no one’s sunburned yet! This also gives us time to reschedule incase of rain or in climate weather. We can schedule a sunrise session before breakfast or a golden hour session just before dinner. Make it a full experience by planning dinner or a treat nearby afterward.
Great post-session dinner spots:
Nona Blue – Upscale tavern located in Ponte Vedra
Trasca & Co Eatery – Relaxed, family friendly spot for pizza and panino’s in Ponte Vedra
Julington Creek Fish Camp – If your session is at Alpine Groves Park this is a neighborhood staple
V Pizza – A local chain with locations all over Duval and St. Johns counties, you’re sure to get a yummy dinner here no matter where your photo session is
Want a low-key post-shoot treat? Head to one of the many delicious ice cream spots around town such as Mayday, Cookies & Cream or Flo’s.
Best Time of Day for Vacation Photos
The best lighting for beach or outdoor photos is during golden hour—about an hour before sunset. That’s when we get that dreamy, soft glow that makes your family look like they belong in a magazine.
Early morning (shortly after sunrise) is also an option, especially for little ones who wake up early. The light is beautiful, there are hardly any people around, and you can knock out your session before most people finish their coffee.
We’ll work around your vacation schedule and energy level to find the time that feels easiest and most fun.
What to Pack for a Vacation Photo Session
Packing for family photos while traveling doesn’t have to be a headache. Here are a few essentials to bring:
Outfits hung or rolled in a garment bag to avoid wrinkles. Make sure to iron or steam out any wrinkles before your session
A neutral pair of shoes or sandals for everyone—or plan to go barefoot at the beach
Snacks, wipes, bug spray and water (especially for evening sessions and little ones)
Touch-up items like a brush, lip balm, or powder compact
Extra: A backup outfit for little ones just in case
Don’t forget: I’ll help with styling before you travel, so you’re not guessing what to pack. I’ll provide a color palette, outfit suggestions, and even shoppable links tailored to your family.
Top Family-Friendly Places to Stay in Jacksonville
If you’re looking for a beautiful home base for your family photos (and your beach days), here are some of my favorite resorts and rentals:
Ponte Vedra Inn & Club – Luxury, family-friendly, and right on the beach
The Lodge & Club at Ponte Vedra Beach – Sister resort to Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, elegant and peaceful with oceanfront views
Hammock Beach – Bright, fun, and steps from the sand
Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa – Great for larger families and groups, with plenty of activities for all ages
There are also tons of beautiful short-term vacation rentals in Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Vilano Beach, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine that give your vacation a casual, lived-in charm. As someone who has traveled with kids for the past 13 years, I know how clutch an Airbnb can come in for family vacations.
How to Turn Your Vacation Photos into Keepsakes
So many families tell me their vacation gallery ends up being one of their most treasured sets of images. Why? Because you’re all together, relaxed, and simply enjoying the moment. Whether it’s an extended family all vacationing together or a simple family session, these are going to be photographs that you want to print and hold onto, every day.
After your session, I can help you turn your images into meaningful keepsakes, including:
Custom photo albums – A beautiful way to document your session and include as many of your favorite photographs as you can
Framed prints for your home – Choose a favorite beach portrait to hang in your living room or hallway
Mini albums or framed prints as gifts – Perfect for grandparents and your children so they can keep a momento for themselves.
You’ll also receive high-resolution digital files to download, share, and reprint any time. Whether you’re building a gallery wall, refreshing your holiday cards, or creating a coffee table album, I’m here to make sure your memories don’t live only on your phone.
Vacation photos are about more than just smiling at the camera—they’re about celebrating the season of life you’re in and remembering the way it felt to pause, connect, and play together.

FAQ
Here are some common questions that I get asked about what it’s like working with me or about booking your photography session. If you don’t see the answer to your question, please feel free to contact me!

I am a natural light photographer that loves working with families of all colors, shapes and sizes in every stage of life. I get to know your family so that we can capture real, candid moments that showcase your love for each other. I have lots of ideas, activities and poses that help you connect as a family and help me make true, honest portraits. Your family is perfect just the way they are. It is my job to document your love.

-
Family sessions normally take place outside, during golden hour (1-1.5 hours before sunset). Certain locations require sunrise sessions (15 minutes before sunrise). If you would like to do an at home lifestyle session, we typically meet mid-day.
Newborn sessions are always held in the comfort of your own home, typically within the first two weeks after baby is born. Newborn sessions can take place up to one month after birth.
-
Family sessions typically last one hour and newborn sessions last up to three hours. However, I don’t like to set a finite amount of time for your session. I work until I feel like we have captured a comprehensive gallery of your family. Sometimes that is a little less time than estimated and sometimes it’s a bit more.
